Амина Окуева; Наталья Никифорова; Natalya Nikiforova
Brief description
Amina Okuyeva was a Chechen dissident. She was a representative of the Free Caucasus Social and Political Movement in Ukraine (Chechenews.com, 2021) and the press secretary of the Dzhokhar Dudayev International Peacekeeping Battalion, led by her third husband, Adam Osmayev.
As a woman in the highly patriarchal Chechen dissident community, her prominence and involvement in combat operations was highly unusual. This was partly aided by her background: She was of mixed Chechen and Polish descent, was born in Odessa, and possessed Ukrainian citizenship. She fought in the Second Chechen War against Russia and acted as a doctor during the Euromaidan in Ukraine in 2013-2014 (Caucasian Knot, 2020).
Okuyeva was assassinated on the outskirts of Kyiv in October 2017; Osmayev was wounded in the same attack. Both had survived a similar attack the preceding June. In 2020, the Ukrainian authorities arrested Igor Redkin from Dagestan and three other unidentified people in connection with the attack; Redkin was released under house arrest and fled Ukraine in February 2022, after Russia’s invasion, with Ukraine unsuccessfully seeking his extradition from Hungary (RFE/RL, 2023).
