Boris Nemtsov was a prominent liberal politician who played a significant role in Russia's political landscape during the 1990s and early 2000s. He served as governor of Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast from 1991 to 1997 and as first deputy prime minister from 1997 to 1998. In the early 2000s, he co-founded the Union of Right Forces, a liberal political party, and was a member of the State Duma from 1999 to 2003. Throughout his career, Nemtsov was an outspoken critic of government corruption and authoritarianism. His assassination in 2015, near the Kremlin, was widely regarded as a significant blow to Russia's opposition movement.
