Vladimir Alekseyev is the long-serving chief of staff and first deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
Alekseyev played a key role in coordinating relations with the Wagner Group: During the June 2023 mutiny he published a video appealing to group members to back down, saying he had worked with it “from the first day of the existence of the organisation” (New America, 2025).
