Brief description
Abubakar Yangulbyaev is a Chechen human rights and a lawyer with the Committee Against Torture. He is a prominent opponent of the regime of Ramzan Kadyrov.
Harassment and departure from Russia
In December 2021, the Chechen security services searched Yangulbayev’s home and confiscated equipment. He was released and immediately fled Russia. The move was initially thought to be linked to his human rights work; however, it later became clear that it — like the campaign against his mother, Zarema Musayeva — was more likely linked to the opposition activism of his brother, Ibragim (Kavkaz Realii, 2022).
