Brief description
Suleyman Geremeyev is Chechnya’s long-serving representative to the Federation Council. He was first nominated to the council in October 2009, following the premature resignation of Umar Dzhabrailov; he was confirmed as Chechnya’s representative in February 2010. Some sources suggested that his nomination was intended to ensure immunity from prosecution, after he was implicated in the 2008 abduction of vor v zakone Ruslan Atlangeriyev and the 2008 murder of Ruslan Yamadayev.
Geremeyev’s mandate as senator was briefly terminated in June 2011 and he was elected as deputy for the Council of Deputies of Starogladovskoye settlement in Chechnya’s Shelkovskiy Rayon. A few days later, however, he was renominated to the Federation Council. He is not, however, known for being active as a senator: In February 2020, Caucasian Knot reported that he had not initiated any legislation since 2015. He has generally kept a relatively low profile.
Geremeyev is a close ally of State Duma Deputy Adam Delimkhanov and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
