“Re-Islamisation” and Ethno-Nationalism: the Circassians (Adyghe) of the Northwestern Caucasus and Their Diaspora
In Moshe Gammer (ed.), Ethno-Nationalism, Islam and the State in the Caucasus: Post-Soviet Disorder. London: Routledge
28-49
This chapter discusses the penetration of Islam into the Northwestern Caucasus in the 1990s and the process of ‘re-Islamisation’ of the Circassian (Adyghe) people in this region. It focuses on the role of diaspora Circassians and Circassian ethno-nationalism in these developments.2 This case study seeks to illuminate aspects of the mutual relationship between Islam and ethno-nationalism, and to contribute to the discussions on the current dissemination of Islam. At the same time it hopes to contribute to the study of Islam in a region that, to date, has received little academic attention.
