Brief description
The Sheikh Mansur Battalion is a Chechen unit that has beem fighting for Ukraine in its war with Russia since 2014.
The creation of both the group and the Sheikh Mansur Battalion was initiated by the Free Caucasus Social and Political Movement (Chechenews.com, 2022).
It is not formally subordinated to the Ukrainian Armed Forces — it is the only one of the four main Chechen units to remain independent — but collaborates closely with both the Ukrainian military and the other Chechen units that are aligned with it.
It is not to be confused with the Sheikh Mansur Battalion that is part of the Russian Ministry of Defence and supports the Chechen regime of Ramzan Kadyrov.
