Brief description
The Border Service of Russia was created in 2003 when the Federal Border Service was folded into the Federal Security Service (FSB). It possesses its own intelligence department, as well as regional directorates (Soldatov and Borogan, 2010). It still receives a separate budget allocation (Cooper, 2007).
In 2020, Dosye cited expert estimated the border service to have 100,000-120,000 personnel (Dosye, 2025); Renz estimated 100,000 (Renz, 2018:98-101).
