Borgatti and Lopez-Kidwell (2011:44): Different types of relationship:
- Social relations I - role-based: Kinship, friendship, boss of, teacher of, etc. This type of relationship is usually institutionalised with rights and obligations.
- Social relations II - perceptions and attitudes: Knowing, liking, disliking.
- Similarity: Physical proximity, co-membership, common behaviours and beliefs.
- Interactions: Talking with, fighting with, meeting with.
- Flows: Resources, information, diseases.
Network flow models focus on social relations and interactions, which in turn determine flows.
